Hi all, I've managed to get my hands on a Granada V6 auto, and wanting to
put it in my SJ, anybody got any advice or experience in this conversion, Is
there anything I should watch out for, any possible problems I might run
into?

TIA

Let's put aside the problems that the SJ transmission might have with a
'slight' increase in BHP...
There are other things to consider first like:

Will the V6 & auto box physically fit in the SJ?
How high will the V6 have to be mounted to clear the front diff?
Will the V6&box combo fit without moving the transfer box backwards?
How do you plan on up-rating the front suspension to cope with the extra
weight?

You'll also have to seriously modify the transmission tunnel, find room for
a much bigger radiator and acquire a huge supply of 'spare' diffs, transfer
boxes, half-shafts, etc, etc.

I can't help you, but I'd love to see it when it's finished!

I sound like I know what I'm talking about, but don't
be fooled.

Best of Luck.

I've seen pictures of SJ's with a big block chevy engine in the engine bay,
the grill need to be modded for the pullies to fit in, and the ford engine
isnt that much bigger than most engine converstions, running a tape measure
over the engine and engine bay there would appear to be loads of room
althought not totally convinced about the tranny tunnel.

As for the diffs, i think they could handle 100 -150 bhp, seen them handle
much more, but i guess time will tell.

Not sure about the difference in wieght between the two engines, not found
any fact or figures yet, not something i considered - thanks

Also not sure about how high i need to mount engine to clear diff tops, but
im not that worried as there is 'some' room for adjustment ( i can see a big
hole in top of bonnet coming....)

Thanks for the advice,

Sure, bend it you mend it though...:)

Another angle

1. Remove bonnet.
2. Remove SJ engine
3. Remove ALL seats from inside.
4. Fit Driver seat onto SJ engine mounts.
5. Fit V6 mid position where seating was.

It will fit, however the Ford V6 is very heavy so it's far to nose heavy for any
serious off road use, you will need to make serious mods to the transmittion
tunnel, the rad will have to go in the back, you'll need a SPOA (to clear the
sump) and you'll need Bedford Rascall rear spings on the front to cope with the
weight (you'll need to re-locate the mounts are the springs are a couple of
inches longer) there is probably more but that's off the top of my head.

I ran a highly modified Ford X-flow, tested to 130bhp, in a 410 for a number of
years, got through a few rear diffs, biggest problem I had was rear props, used
to burst the yolks open, not a problem if you carry a spare ;-)

Not my conversion as such, I just thought of a cheap way of doing it ;-)

If Mr Paranoid is thinking of doing it that page is very out of date and the
method has been improved over the years.

I'm in the process of trying to shoehorn a Ford 2.9i V6 into a Vitara at
the moment (along with a lot of other things) I think your biggest
problem will be the length of the engine and gearbox, this will require
you to move the transfer box back quite a long way resulting in a very
short rear prop which will limit suspension travel a lot.
As a result I'm going to use a manual gearbox (if I can ever find one to
fit anyone got anything lying around??)
If its an injection you've got make sure you get the wiring loom, your
gonna need it!!

Sounds more appropriate treatment for a V-12 conversion.

But I have seen a pic of a Suzuki Jimney with a Dodge V-10 engine and
coustom made gearbox running Dana 60 axles and 44 inch tyres.

Musta cost near on half a million or more to modify, but imagine something
that light and nimble with that power!!!

Hi.
The last time I saw this done, The engine and gearbox had been
mid-mounted? just behind the seats. The SJ was built for display/stunt
use! Good luck with your conversion

All The Best.
