Hi, after getting the 410 back together and a week of no problems, it
started over heating after only 6 miles road use, turned out on this
occasion to be the timing severely retarded, however, the problem's
reoccured and there seems to be no problem with the water pump or cooling
system/fan, I have got another pump to try just in case but I wondered if
there maybe any other problems that people have come across?

Cheers in advance :)

Did you have the head off ? (Head gasket wrong way round)

Have you flushed the rad ?
Have you checked the thermostat ?
Fan belt okay ?

I stripped mine to clean up and replace the valves, replaced all the
gaskets, and it developed a overheating problem after 6ish miles, I later
traced it to the water pump gasket, although brand spanking new, was leaking
slightly, might be worth a good check.

Head had been off, but all reassembled ok as far as I know

Thermostat replaced

> Fan belt okay ?

Fan replaced due to it being clipped (any ideas on why someone would do
that?)
Belt tensioned fine.

The head gasket looks like it can go both ways, it can't, quick test it to take
the rocker cover off, run the engine and make sure there is loads of oil being
sprayed about, messy but cheaper then a new head.

But does it open ?

Are you loosing any water ?

You say you replaced the fan, is this with the correct fan or with one made to
fit ?

I'll give that a go

Rad hasn't been flushed, one step I will take whatever

Yes

It was one stripped off another 410 lump.

Thanks for all the help too :)

There's been quite a lot of discussion on this subject on
www.rhinoriders.com recently. I have a theory, which is that the cooling
system is poorly designed. The radiator hoses are really quite small,
but also the radiator is set back a way from the grille with lots of
empty space on both sides and underneath. That doesn't exactly encourage
the air to flow through the radiator, although it should cope if the fan
is working properly.

I fitted an electric fan to my SJ410, and I can tell you that the car
can do around 8 miles at 60mph on a hot day before the fan cuts in.
Also, on the one occasion my temperature gauge did hit H, the expansion
bottle was bubbling and the top hose was rock solid. If yours doesn't do
that then it's not overheating!

Anyway, assuming you've followed all the suggestions so far, is your
matrix clogged? Are you restricting the airflow with large spotlights?

Mike
