Silencer removal?

Hi All. A little help needed here please. I'm expecting through the post one of muddy mods slimline silencers.
I'm now trying to remove the one on the car at the moment but need help. I've removed 2 rubber bands holding it up and undone a big jubilee type clamp where the silencer meets the other part of the exhaust. I'ts not moving. Shall I hacksaw near the joint and get a pair of pipe grips on it? what do you think......cheers
 
I took one off a 2001 1.8 a few days ago. As you say, I removed 2 rubber mounts. The joint to the pipe over the axle was a bolt (which snapped) that closed up a (2" or 3" wide) plate wrapped around the joint - the plate was riveted to the top of the rear box pipe and just needed pushing out at both ends. I then just lifted and lowered the rear box to lossen the joint and it came out pretty easy.
 
Should add that its a Kiwi car, so I'm sure the exhaust (as well as being in good condition) is original. What Kwik-Fit would bung on, or if a TD4 is any different, I don't know.

I've had the same trouble. If you bash and twist it too much you can dent the pipe (the bit you're leaving on) and cause damage further up the exhaust system. I cut the old box off well away from the joint and then carfeully nibbled away at it. I could then clamp mole grips on the remnants and peel then off.

Angle grinder best for this - if you haven't got one, get one. Essential tool for car maintenance in the rust belt.
 
I hack-sawed the main box off and got a pair of stilsons on the pipe and managed to start turning it :) I've wd40d it and after lunch it should turn free. Thanks chaps.

Put some copper grease on the pipe joint and clamp threads when you fit the new one. Yes, there's heat there but I use it to keep the latches smooth on our solid-fuel range cooker/boiler and it copes just fine.

Makes the job easier for the next man - which might be you!

Will do. It's actually on but I want to tweak it to sit under the bumper where the eye hook thingy is but I'm having mega grief trying to remove it. A couple of bolts are rounded off as well. I'll post pic over weekend though

I made my own rear silencer. It fits nice and high and I left the tow ring, heat deflector in place.

Here it is fitted. I still want to raise it by moving that tow eye. I've

removed 4 out of the 6 bolts but those other 2 ain't having it. I'm not resting until they are out. Think I'm gonna have to visit my local garage :(
 
Imho that is high enough. It won't hit the ground before either the rear sub frame or tow bar does. A simple straight edge placed between the tow bar and lower point on the sub frame, will show where the contact points are. ;)

Hi mate; I am also considering the Muddy Mods exhaust. I have a couple of questions if you have a moment; Does it sound much different and/or louder? I do appreciate your hearing may not be so good after Motörhead though. Also; Do you notice any power difference at all? Sure does look tucked up out of the way though and an exhaust silencer guard is less necessary. But I do like wrapping metal around my car. Because I wanted a tank. Sorry went off there. Thanks
 
Hi Phil. There is a distinctive rumble with the MM silencer fitted and it sounds really nice. Performance? I'm not sure. In the last few months I've done the egr removal, manifold clean with oven cleaner at the same time and fitted silicone hoses as well as the new silencer. All round the car is running 100% better. All I'm left with is the 5ucking dying duck noise and as much as I've read how to get rid of it on this forum I can't get my stupid head around it. For a complete idiot and I 5hit you not I think I've done really well so far :)
p.s. Your welcome to travel to scummy Harrow to try before you buy :)
 
Nice one I have ordered one but I didn't know of the dying duck noise but my ears have lost a bit of range I think. Which is nice. Yeah, having a FL is a learning curve indeed and I have done the same as you with much the same results I think. You can work on a FL that's for sure. It is the first car I have enjoyed doing this to, and actually liked really.
And Harrow; it's all yours but if you ever get down here let me know and I will give you a tour or some bowlocks like that. Or a cup of tea or something that probably doesn't involve much effort because I will be knackered from working on the car
