Hi , i am a few months in to owning my first defender90 99TD5
yesterday as i was driving home after 3rd gear when im speeding up the car shakes and struggles to pick up speed, shuddering also, but once it does actually get to fifth gear (55-60mph) it drives smooth as normal i think, car also sounds abit louder than normal , idling and up to 3rd gear everything is ok.. Hopefully someone can help thanks :))

When under load, if there is a shudder, often this is due to one of the UJ's (hardy spicers) failing.
There are other causes but this is what i'd look for first.
Get under the car and see if there is any movement in the UJ's, just give the drive shafts a good shake near to the axle and transfer box and see if anything moves.

If there is you need to replace the UJ. GKN are a good make, they cost around £20 each, personally i'd avoid the £5 each versions.
For around the £100 mark you can get new drive/prop shafts which are easier to fit than replacing the UJ's and would likely work out cheaper than paying a garage to change the UJ's.

Whilst you are under there, grease the shafts and UJ's - if large amounts of grease flow out of one of the UJ's thats another sign it's dying.
You can also check for oil leaks on the axels too. New seals are easily replaced if you have the drive shafts off.

Thank you so much for replying! I will certainly do all of those things, just was strange up to 30mph it’s all good and normal then on the motorway when giving it power it lacks power and is sluggish but when it gets to the higher speed all good again, was thinking the worst scenarios
