My 110 started making some random rattling noises, which I thought came from the engine bay. But when I put it into neutral they stopped.

Then I went back to work left it for a bit. I then drove about 1 mile and the whole van started to shudder and when I put in neutral it still carried on. It only stopped shuddering when I was going about 10-15mph.

I checked underneath and the transfer box has a fair bit of oil on it and quite wet, but no other signs of leakage anywhere else.

My thoughts were that it could be wheel bearings and lack of oil in th transfer box, but tbh I have no idea.

Has anyone come across this before?

There are a lot of reasons why Land Rovers shudder and rattle. Things that come immediately to mind include wheel bearings, propshaft bearings (or even a bent propshaft in one case I can think of), wheels out of balance suspension bushes in poor condition, brake discs running out of true, to name only the most usual of the usual suspects.

I assume the speed dropping is because you're slowing down deliberately?

Well I fixed my handbrake and changed the oil in the axles and now it's stopped shuddering. Only problem is now there is a loud squeaking noise coming from the d/s front wheel. It stops as soon as I release the accelerator. When I give it gas, it get louder. Thought it might be wheel bearings?

Probably a good idea to take it to pieces and have a look. It doesn't do any harm to change the wheel bearings anyway, if they've been there for a long time.

And have a good look at your propshaft UJs - jack a corner up with the transfer box in neutral rotate and check for play. Squeeking under load is a classic UJ fault.

zeaphod, I changed the UJ's on the front prop and it was exactly that. What a difference it has made to driving too, really nice and smooth! Thank you all for your help!

Guys you hit the nail on the head, was the UJ's on the front prop. zeaphod, yep what a difference it has made, super smooth ride now!
