Should I rebuild my engine?

While I have the Series 3 front end disassembled to change the bulkhead, someone I know said they could help me rebuild the engine.

It's a 2.25 Diesel, it smokes on start-up and has a few oil leaks so would benefit from it. The gearbox also needs some attention as it jumps out of third gear.

However, my friend picked up an injury at work, and won't be able to help.

Everything is already behind as it is. I am still waiting to get the new bulkhead sprayed and the front panel sorted. The chassis also needs some welding doing.

I think I may end up just having to put everything back without doing anything to the engine / box as I can't do it on my own.

I really do wish I'd never bought the Series now, it's been nothing but problems and expense from day one. I really am thinking of just advertising it on ebay as breaking for spares.

Well if it smokes on start up and drops a little oil, it sounds like its just come out of the box!
The majority seem to smoke a little on start up, many after rebuilds I've read.
The biggest issue sounds like the gearbox. I guess it's a case of live with it or get it exchanged. I had a love hate relationship with mine for a long time whilst ironing out issues. It's mostly love now, but they do crave attention or deep pockets.
I'd be tempted to bolt it together and have a look at the engine / box in a few months time and see how you feel about it.

You can pick up a clean box for a decent price on our fave auction website. Give it a once over to check it out, new seals etc... There are some good rebuild guides about and it looks like it would be OK to do as a home project whilst you use the knackered one.
I hate mine sometimes but as always it doesnt last for long. When you see another on the road its a good feeling to know you have a classic that people actually use! Stick with it:D

As the engine runs alright once it gets going it probably makes sense to concentrate on the gearbox.

I have the Original Land Rover repair operations manual which has a section
on rebuilding the box.

From what I've seen on here it may be either the detent springs or some square plate springs in the gears. I forget the name of these springs but apparently they have something to do with the synchro mechanism. I remember reading that they can be replaced through one of the gearbox access panels although it is a fiddly job.

If you're talking about the syncro springs in the 3/4 syncro unit, I to have heard they're possible to replacefrom the top plate. Never actually met any one who has done it and I would go as far as to say that without a pair of highly trained gerbils, it's not possible.

But you could prove me wrong.
