I changed my oil and filter last night and stuch my head under this morning before going to work to see if anything was leaking. as it was pitch black at 6am i used my light on my phone and noticed no leaks :) but i did however notice some bare threads on the "bell housing"? situated behind the sump :(

i saw a little oil and panicked cos i though it was gearbox fluid or something. arrrr! been rushing around all day trying to work it out, i even stopped a bloke in a 90 and asked to look at his! (land rover that is!)

anyway, i phoned a proper land rover dealer (they call themselves proper, not me)... who we deal with at work (not mentioning any names) and he said that it was nothing to worry about and that it is a plug to prevent water entering the clutch system. he said that some people take them out due to wading letting in, and keeping in water/mud which F"£4% the system. and told me not to worry.

ive noticed the leak now comes from the seal around the sump but i just wanted to check with you guys as my description to the land rover bloke was ****e and he could well have been talking about something else...

...so see attached :D

thanks again you wonderful wonderful people ;)

He's more or less right. It's a drain hole in case you get a leak from either the seal on the crank or the seal down the gearbox input shaft so the oil doesn't contaminate the clutch. If there's nufink coming out of it your OK. If you are likely to go into water that deep then it's a good idea to bung it up with a 3/4" BSP plug.
