Turns over and over in the morning before starting.
When it starts it kicks out a load of whitish smoke.

After the morning start it starts fine and has less smoke on startup.

I've charged the battery which made it better.
Its a 2.8 diesel and the problem first started in France.

My diagnosis is a) Flat battery (not enough to notice but enough not to
start it.)
b) Dodgy diesel (French)
c) some sort of compression problem
d) faulty glow plugs

Ok what do you lot think?

Are you getting water spraying out of the overflow for the radiator? sounds
like the beginning of a bad head gasket to me.

Nope. Wouldn't that cause other problems?
Apart from the starting it runs great. And once its started there isn't any
other starting problems

sorry, but i would agree with rnf2, check compressions in each cylinder. Had
identical problem with my sons car only just recently.

I don't know about the white smoke but the rest of
the problem could be a perished fuel hose. Overnight
enough fuel oozes out that the first start of the
day effectively has to prime the system.

It's happened to me, recently, but that was with
a petrol engine. The signs should be obvious if
this is what's happening.

Faulty glow plugs would me my bet.
The smoke is unburnt fuel.
When it is firing up, is it "rougher" for a few seconds then smothes out?

yep, when it is slightly warm it runs and start like a dream. It's only
first thing and only on cold mornings.

Almost certainly glowplugs, or glowplug relay.

I'd go with glowplugs.

Try a search on, http://www.pocuk.com

It's the Pajero club site, but they are close enough to have the same
problems, a lot of people are reporting bad glowplugs now the weather has
got cooler.

Cheers

Exactly the same symptoms as my 3.0D Trooper last winter. Three glow plugs
were faulty and were replaced - its fine now.
