Now, bear in mind my 90 has just passed its MOT. I have also, during normal driving, had no issue with the brakes which have worked fine.
However, the other day, I had to emergency brake to avoid the car in front. And I very nearly didnt make it . A second similar incident a few days later prompts this question.
It was a heart stopping moment as i hit the brakes hard, and nothing much happened quickly. I stopped but all too spongey and slowly, with no real bite.:(
Now I`m comparing the my brakes to my wifes Cooper S and my previous sports cars brakes and ability to brake real crisply, which may not be fair.
The question is, how do I improve the braking system on my 300 tdi ?
Is a Disco rear axle with discs I presume the only way forward or are there other mods people can suggest. (I am already putting more distance between me and the car in front as a result of these incidents).
:p Beat ya to it.

How old are your brake pads could of gone hard .

Btw you cannot compare sports car brakes to a landy no way no how - never , you must remember that its a landy your driviing and the brakes are based on old school tech with wider tolerences and was never ment to be sporty so the brakes are designed thus .

but change your brake fluid ( prop never been changed - what colour is it ? ) , and see if that makes any difference first , or even bleed em to see if you got a bit of air in the system .

Even if its clean over time brake fluid starts to absorb moisture and you strt to get the spongey feeling. I flush the fliud on my quattro every year and they never go soft...well unless im trying to go back to the future:D:D

The Braking System Fault Diagnonsis pic looks impressive but isn't quite right. Soft brakes can be caused by a failed primary seal in the master cylinder. Basically, bleed the brakes and fill with new fluid. If they're still spongy, suspect the master cylinder.
