A somewhat prosaic question, but if off-roaders don't know how to get mud
off cars, who would? Any recommendations as to what to clean my shiny, brand
new, black (Yes, I know, but black looks great when it's clean) X-Trail
with? It's been Supagard treated, but the after-care shampoo that Supagard
give you is as much use as a chocolate fire-guard. My much beloved Turtlewax
Hot Wax that I used for years has been replaced with an anaemic preparation
called Extreme Wash & Wax which does neither very well, and leaves Extremely
wonderful streaks. 'Er Indoors washes her new Hyundai coupé V6 every couple
of hours (well, it is new :) ) and is complaining that I'm not providing
the right kit for her to do it with, so to save me any more ear'ole bashing
- who recommends what, chaps?

Regards,

Bob

Err, off-roaders tend to use cold water and a welly boot, have you
tried that? I've used a rubber mallet to get serious stuff off
before, but only in the early days, I don't bother any more as it just
gets muddy again.

Petrol and nitromors? Or just buy a new one?

Not asking mud-lovers how to get rid of mud perhaps! Wax? Shampoo?
Honestly!

How about a more conventional car group, or even the max power
brigade? They know a lot about buffing.

Washing? Leave it out and the rain does it... Though mine is
currently looking decidedly yuky after 250 miles on salted motorways.

I *might* do something about that at some point but not today, temp
just above freezing and a F4/F5 NNE'ly bring the wind chill down to
-15C not a good day for going outside and getting wet...

250? I reckon its a good 1500 miles of salty motorways since my motor last
saw water that wasn't delivered from above.

Surprising as it may sound- a good wash and wax polish just BEFORE you go
offroading helps a lot- the mud tends to just slide off rather than stick
(to the paint anyway)! Nothing like turning up to an offroad meet in
gleaming car- "you're not going in there in THAT are you?" said one
unsuspecting 'hardcore' 4x4'er. Oh the the looks on thier faces!

A jetwash to the underbody cleans most of the lumpy from underneath. Just
make sure you do it in the local garage or you'll have to shovel it up from
your driveway afterwards!

As a side note I recently got reprimanded by the boss for leaving the works
car park muddy! At least no one parks in MY spot!

The only thing left to clean out then is the engine bay- I'm still working
out the best way to do that (diesel engine). Any ideas chaps?

I found that when I left the engine bay on my 90 unwashed I never had any
problems at all.... the mud dried on and offered protection ... bonnet deep
at Tixover and in a deep ford ! never let me down starting never cut out in
water ...

YEP it was a 2.5 Petrol :)

come to think of it .. I cant remember washing the outside more than twice
in the 3 years I had it!
