Well the day has come,
took my TD4 into main dealers for IRD driveshaft oil seal change (£100)
and asked them to get her off floor and run it to find my wob wob growling bearing noise....its from the IRD!!! AARRGGHHHH

Of course I will get a second opinion but I have two sources for a new IRD unit at the moment (reconditioned) AW transmissions...anyone ever dealt with them? And of course Austen who I got my diff from.

then I have to find someone to fit it as im not going to consider attempting it myself.

Anyone brought a recon one lately and can give me any feedback?
Cheers,

on the plus side the stealership did the checks on ramps with listening equipment, washed and polished it...and I picked it up and told them I wanted a second opinion.
said I'd pay for there time "no problem sir, no charge-bring it back if you change your mind" all because I told them I do Rover Rescue with the Breckland LandRover club!
Fairly decent I thought!

had VCU bearings changed twice by a garage and they assured me they put genuine on the second time! I bit the bullet and ordered my own oil seal and some GKN support bearings from lrseries. Gonna remove prop to tonight and have a look.

when I changed driveshaft front seal on IRD how much oil will I lose? I have about 900ml left in my bottle and people tell me I don't need to drain IRD to change seal, I'll just lose a bit in my drip pan I'll be using!?

I don't know about the front, but on the rear when i changed my seals I lost nothing or at worst a couple of drips. just take a look at where the bottom of the level plug is in comparison to the bottom of the driveshafts.

cheers for the tip..

what are your opinions on my support bearing noises?

That front one does sound noisey compared to the back and changing them has got to be the way forwards opposed to getting a new ird.
When they were fitted were they correctly aligned? they are meant to be square to the vcu....... the easiest way to do this is to measure back to the vcu with a ruler from either side of the bearing bracket and when the distance is the same its in the correct position.

Good man, It'll be intresting to see if they are gkn. If they are then they could have been damaged during fitting causing premature failiure.
Thinking back ...when I had my prop off for a knocking noise at the rear ...another story.....still not fixed but hasn't got any worse in 12 months....( i now think it's the rear diff ouput shaft bearings ). i had the assembly on my garage floor for weeks and spinning the bearings...they were virtually silent, so i'd say front one fecked and the rear not much better.
