Hi

I bought a 2000 freelander 1.8p a month ago and when we first got it it needed the clutch hydraulics replacing, this was done but now there is a severe judder when pulling off in first gear from a standstill or also when reversing, it varies in severity from not there at all, to just a gentle vibration to shaking so severely it broke part of the exhaust heatshield! it is worse in situations where you cannot pull off smoothly and lift the clutch completely eg when in stop start traffic.

I at first thought that it may be related to the common VCU/IRD problems however it doesn't have any stepping to the rear tyres or any other symptoms.

I am hoping to get some ideas that I can prove one way or the other so I can present it back to the dealer for sorting under warranty.

Many thanks in advance

95000. when it went back to the second hand car dealer they had a "Land Rover expert" have a look at it who said that there was no problem with it, it may be down to a new clutch being fitted and it needs bedding in, however we have done over 1,000 miles since we bought it and it hasnt got any better.

There seems to be a circular hole cut into the side of the bellhousing and the pressure plate looks new but I havent had a proper look through it yet

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? I have just had a new clutch fitted to my 04 Freelander and am having the same problem?
That fella hasn't been online in over a year - you might have quite a wait for a reply. You might try a PM or indeed if you looked through his posts when he might have been selling a L Series, there might even be an email address listed.

I have an L Series Freelander and I've had the exact same symptoms as described above, ie "a severe judder when pulling off in first gear" - I've never experienced it in reverse I don't think but sometimes everything was OK other times it would really shake hard and judder. I've had it for ages (like years). I wondered if I had an oil leak onto the clutch or the clutch was on its way out - but other than the frequent judder when pulling away the clutch was fine.

2 weeks ago I changed the RH engine mount and lower tie bar and the clutch is now perfect! It is a revelation and I can't explain it - but it has completely cured a clutch problem most horrible. The old mount was very stiff - there was very little flexibility in it, the new one is much more flexible - I don't know if that's what did it. The car is also vibrating quite a bit more now - so the engine has shifted and I'm trying to resolve that - but I don't know if maybe that had something to do with the clutch working.

Mine is the L Series diesel - so uses the same clutch and PG1 gearbox as the 1.8 K Series petrol.
