hiya
thanks so much for all the great help, i duly went down the road to a local garage and asked them to quote me to do the following
to replace the gearbox oil automatic
drain and refill the ird unit
drain and refill the final drive unit
drain and renew the engine oil and filter
they came back with a quote of 4 hours labour and £464.00 inc vat.
well after picking myself up off the floor i went down the road and bought some 2.5 ton ramps.
got my son to get the bottom engine cover off drained the oil out and we replaced the engine filter , drained out the ird and refilled.
sucked out the oil from the diff and refilled for the grand total of £65.00 that was for semi synthetic oil and a genuine engine oil filter.
i asked the garage why it was so expensive they advised me the rear diff couldnt be correctly drained without removing a plate from the diff
i did notice that there are oil leaks between the drive shaft and ird so after reading through this site it looks as though the drive shaft oil seals have gone.
is it easier to drop out the ird and replace the oil seals on the bench
i checked the front drive shafts and there is movement on the joints so this is i think where my vibration is coming from.
what i also intend to do is to pull out the drive shafts as taking to the garage is out of the question.
has anyone rebuilt there drive shafts, i think i will also jet wash under the car, pull off the sump plates and drain the oils out into a clean container and then renew all the gaskets along the way, then reuse the clean oil back into the units, i know its backwards but i finally feel im making progress.
i know ive got a nightmare on my hands but so fed up with getting ripped off by garages who want to charge alot of money.
after getting the bottom engine cover off it took my son 90 mins to get all the work done. alas we left the automatic gearbox alone, but found it out really bad they wanted an extra 90 mins labour whilst up on a ramp when we was able to do it in half the time.
ive looked on ebay at the cost of new drive shafts and they are priced £70 for one side and nearly £500 for the other, is there anything special about them
thanks so much again guys for all your help
all the best
