Hey, I'm new to this forum, I've had a search but couldn't find anything giving me a solid answer... I'm sure this is a question that has been asked more than once on here...

My dad has recently bought (what we believe to be) a series III pickup. It was first registered 14/6/73... 6 months shy of that "magic date" We are trying to find out whether it was built prior to the 1/1/73...

Does anyone know how we can come by this info?

any help is greatly appreciated :)

Once we've got it all sorted out we'll set about doing it up... It's looking a bit dishevelled right now... But we'll obviously keep track of our progress for anyone who's interested :)

Contact the heritage museum in Gayden Surrey. Google it, they charge £5 for a search of the records and let you know the outcome. You will need the chassis number
 
I did a search for mine, think it was £40 for the official certificate. DVLA accepted it as proof and I got an age related plate within 30 mins.... Tax was already historic anyway but I didn't like the "W" reg plate that was on it

If it was classed as historic, then surely you could just buy a K reg or whatever without having to prove anything to the DVLA... or did they just issue a nice age related plate for free for you?

Mine is a 72 but is on a V which I too don't like. So I would be interested in why you did what you did.

the first three chassis numbers identify the spec ie yours is/was an 88 diesel.

if your next 5 numbers are before 02995. then it IS tax exempt.
if your next 5 numbers are after 03376. it IS NOT tax exempt.
if between these numbers use the above link to check.

so i would say no, unfortunatly yours is not tax exempt.

Mine came out of the military in 1980 ish, the log book just said "declared manafuctured 1971", it was good enough to class as historic with free tax, but I wanted to put black and silver plates on it legally.

Basicaly I got the heritage musuem to do a search (£5), then once they confirmed the actual build date as 2/12/197 and despatch date as 8/12/1971, I paid for an authentic certificate (£40) which took about 3 weeks to come through. Once it came through I went to the local DVLA office in Leeds and said I want an age related plate, showed them the MOT, insurance, tax disc, logbook and the authentication certificate (which is a recognised body to the DVLA)

Within 30 minutes, they had scanned and amended the MOT certificate, given me a new tax disc with the new "K" reg on it and a certificate to get the number plates made up...... and it was all free !!!
 
We paid for a check through the heritage society, the date that came back was 15 may 73... so it's not tax exempt... You can't win 'em all can you? :)

That's fantastic. Just one more question, was it a requirement to get the heritage certificate as the log book shows manufacture date anyway. Thanks
 
My log book had a manufacture date of 1971 no month or date just the year ????

I took the cert as when I rang them they said they needed extra proof from a recognised body
