Hi all, so ive recently acquired a diesel series III (registered as a 2a but all the bits are III) and want to change oils and such ASAP since I don't know when its been last done etc. However, when looking into the bay the filler for the oil isn't there. Where it's meant to be there is a plate with a badly installed seal. So i'm wondering first, what the name of the filler is, and second could this have been done for a reason? Ill post images below. Cheers.

Cheers guys, am I right in saying there should be a filler and its been taken out? Can't imagine it being an easy way to fill the engine with oil...

Nope, buy your self a small funnel, cut it down so that it'll sit happily and flat in the hole in the rocker cover ... pour oil into that, not too fast or it'll spill ...

yes I guess it got stolen , there was a big trade in them in the 90s and many were exported.
Lots of owners replaced them with round things.

If you ever see a real one they are worth about the same as a penny black stamp.

its a 2.5 so it doesnt have the screw cap just pulls off and thats how they are, its got a sherpa inlet manifold and and filter, if the front timing cover is tin its a sherpa 2.5, if ali an lr 2.5

WTF! I've never seen anything like this. Looks like you've got some kind of oil cooler fitted above the place where the air filter oil bath normally goes. It seems to be suspended with the input output pipes. The other oddity is the air filter thingy sitting on top

Posted too quickly. So it's a Sherpa 2.5. Never seen that before. What's the air filter doing on top of the vacuum unit?

was a very popular 2.5 in to series conversion ,air filter sit directly on to inlet manifold, they were a slighly better fit than lr 2.5 due to air filter and front timing case /injection pump position
Your telling me things I didn't even know! There again I'm new to the game. How come people were putting these engines in? I'll have to peek about for the number at the weekend. Thanks for the updates Lads! I'm afraid I'll be asking a fair few questions over the next while!

slightly more power ,its the same block fly wheel and flywheel housing etc as the series 2.25 so an easy fit engine number should begin 15j

It looks like it has the Sherpa engine, you can see the front cover is tin in the first pic. I spent 5 mins wondering what you were going on about because I have the LR 2.5 and like yours that doesn't have the filler spout.

Filler spouts were designed to get oil in quicker as if you used the rocker cover filler the oil would take ages to drain through the engine, think it also had a breather cap aswell as one on the rocker cover to help it breath better but the 2.5 engine did away with all that and just used a breather cap on the rocker cover :)
