I've always been a fan of land rovers but I am a noob when it comes to all the different shapes, sizes, models etc.

I've wanted a landy like this (pic 1)

The one in the pic is on ebay now but a bit out of my price range and I'm after more of a project.

I've settled on a 3 series mainly for insurance reasons but looking on ebay I've come across models that look more like this (pic 2)

The grill placement on the first pic I love! The placement in pic 2 one not so much, is the first landy modified or is that a slightly different model?

If it is modified how hard is it to do a modification like that?

Also is there a landy that could be cheaper on insurance? I'm only 17 and the 3 series is the cheapest I have come across so far

Thanks in advance

1st bit of advise is do some home work, there are so many options and price variants. Defenders will probably be more expensive than a series, how competent at spannering are you, do you enjoy working on motors have you got the funds, loads to take into consideration before you buy.

I've been doing a bit of homework but like you said there is just so much out there!

I've restored cars before and have got some welding experience. My biggest problem now is finding the right landy!

The first one looks a bit like a 90/S3 cross with some heavy mods done to it which always run the risk of making your registration and insurance illegal. It's likely to push your insurance costs up anyway. The second one looks a lot more "standard". Ideally a S3 should still be on leaf springs and with its original engine type but a lot of engine replacements don't seem to change the insurance a lot, but beware of extra costs of the V8.

Go for the Series, I bought my lad one when he passed his test at 17, insurance was £660, Defender insurance is way more. Series are easy to work on and parts are very cheap.

As spyderman says series is your best bet, but definitely go for a drive in one before you buy, they are an acquired taste and not for everyone. slow, noisy , vague steering if not up too scratch, brakes iffy.

You learn to drive properly though in a Series, my lad is now 24 never had an accident, now drives a BMW 3.0L Z4 Coupe, insurance less than £900 fully comp.

£660?! how long ago was this? i'm looking at £1800 and thats cheap!

but yes, defender insurance is still a lot more!

I love loud slow and uncomfortable people don't want lifts all the time then!

A mate of mine had a classic mini, not at all similar but the noise and comfort was horrible but I didn't mind that
