My gauge is not working until I earth the single spade connect on top of the tank I found this out with my test lamp to see if there was power there as I did that the gauge went up.
My question should it be earthed originally?
And can I earth it permanent ?

No the float inside the tank has a slider on a resistor hence gives different readings for different levels.
Try reconnecting the gauge lead and put a known good earth to the tank incase the return path is poor.
If no response you will need to take the sender out of the tank to have a look at it / replace .

The tank should have a good earth, otherwise the sender will not work.
