HI Steve you didnt say if it ran or not if yes it may be that the alternator although new may be faulty it happened to me but i would swap the fuses anyway and if you have any inline fuses as well in the starting and lighting circuits

Yeah it was running. Then I put battery on wrong and nothing since won't even turn over totally dead and tried 2 batteries but still nothing. The wiring is a mess too but I can not see spending £300 on a full loom. But I will if I have too. I've not had multimeter out yet that is job for weekend. Just seems funny everything is not working and fuses look ok.

Cheers Steve

The alternator was tested before I fitted it as it was secondhand but from an alternator specialist and only done 300 miles.

Check and clean your main earths then try flicking the positive connection to battery to see if any spark at all. If not connect up and retry lights etc. Might also be worth taking battery solenoid connections of and cleaning them as well.
Reversed current could have caused some arcing at the connections with the excess current.
