I have just fitted an army reconditioned gearbox. It had been sitting around for a few years after reconditioning. I am having problems getting it into gear especially when cold. Once going it is great . I have driven it for several miles and it is a bit easier now but is still quite difficult Is this likely to improve or is some tinkering going to be required ?

It should be good if it went together (don't take my word for it.. thats a "so i've been told".. not experience) I have had new transmissions that took time to "wear in" but none that i would classify as hard.
Is it possible your shifter sliders are frozen up? I have a reconditioned gear box in similar condition. I had to tap the selector slider things free. They were seized up.. Still not free moving. But good enough.

It all went together fine. I can get it into every gear and have driven it quite a bit to try to "run" it in. Main problem is that when I start off it is very difficult to get into any gear without putting pressure on the gearstick and gradually letting the clutch out when it then falls into place.

Is it that you cant move the gearstick fully or is it crunching into gear. I used to fit the recon boxes at work and some turned up to be series 2 type crash box with no sychro on 1st and 2nd.

yea.. maybe its not warming up.. maybe you just are syncing it with RPMs after a bit of driving.
My Toyota has a cable shifter.. and now that its a bit stretched.. i have similar symptom getting into reverse. But that's because its not fully engaged till the gears pull it in. Hmm..

Does it go into gear ok with the engine not running, if so it could be the clutch isnt dis engaging properly causing the shafts still to turn, if so you keep forcing it in will cause your syncro mesh assy to prematurely wear. Let us know and we can go further.

You can check the gate for alignment and adjust it if needed, There is two different detent springs one stiffer than the other, maybe the wrong ones have been used. You could remove the spring end plates or plug and release the pressure and then try it. If its still excessively tight it must be in the box.
