Series 3 engine options

i'm sure this is alreday covered somewhere but idea change. what are the best options for a series 3? i have a 2.5 petrol which is on its last legs so want to update to a diesel. Someone has offered me a 2.5 TD out of a 89 Defender - would that fit my 81 S3? In another thread i have asked about the Perkins 4203 diesel which i bought in haste from ebay and now see reports that don't rate it too highly. grateful for any help

Hi there, my series 3 has a nissan 2.5 diesel fitted ( same as in the london cabs ) very good performance and does about 30 mpg around town! these engines are normally easy 2 get hold of. cheers Henri.
