Series 3 doesn't deserve me!

Hey Guys

Here's a good opportunity for you to mock a new boy!

I bought my second Land Rover yesterday, I own a '51 plate Disco II which will be going back soon, so my Series III is my new love.

I'm a little stuck on the controls though: free wheeling hubs - got the knack of them. The red lever - that's low and high range. That's fair enough. The overdrive is RIDICULOUSLY stiff, seriously hard to move. So can you give me a hint on that please? Should I be using the clutch, when or when should I not be using the overdrive. And FINALLY the yellow lever, the short one, with the spring. It doesn't budge. Is this for the four wheel drive? Is there a diff lock on these babes too? How do I work that one?


Any help would be great!

No Diff lock, yellow lever goes up and down, when you are in high ratio (red fully forward) push iot down to get 4wd. If you want out of 4wd, pull the red lever back to low ratio (perm 4wd) and it will pop up.

Overdrive is like an extra gear ontop of whatever one you are in. So if you are in 3rd with overdrive out you are sort of in 4th. If you then change to 4th with the big stick you are in 5th. Often used when in 4th and running out of revs, use it as 5th. use the clutch to change. Well I always do anyway!

Do not pull away with over drive in in 1st, its not good for them. Use it whenever you like!

The overdrive has a nut on the lever, may have been over tightened, whip the floor pans out and the centre tunnel and loosen off the big nut a flat or two that should make it a big sloppier....

Hi

Many thanks for the advice! It all worked but the yellow lever is pretty stiff, I'll try harder in the daylight and when I've got more time. I was only in the car about 10 minutes tonight!

the yellow lever isn't the smoothest in any of mine (await dodgy comments...bushtoy this is your chance!) Grease it (another chance) and see if that improves it. So long as the red lever works and your hubs are ok you will usually be able to get out of most things

Hi, if the system hasn’t been used for a while the clevis pins and links can seized up, lube or strip down and lube.
For the Overdrive, try what’s been said about the big bolt, if that doesn’t work remove the clevis pin at the end of the linkage and if the lever motion is still stiff you will have to remove the large bolt and clean/lube up.

Superb advice! Low Range four works well, as I found out when I used your advice. I will try the yellow one (or wan as we say in Glasgow) tonight when I get at it in daylight.

So, lube, any particular type (waits for barrage of rude comments)...

Hi guys

Cheers, around 30 second skoosh of WD40 helped the Overdrive come back to life!

Yellow lever moves up and down (by my hand) to about 1/2 an inch. But not much else seems to happen.

Will look on that one at the weekend. I was surprised how good it was off road! I thoughy my Disco II with it's toys would spoil me, but nope! Series was brilliant.
