I have just bought a 1968 series 2A LWB safari station wagon 2.6 6 cylinder and the gear box is giving me a bit of grief. It jumps out of second on the overrun and I have got to really yank it out of third, any idea whats up please. You can read about the Land Rover called the Tart on my web site at www.maythegreenovalbewithyou.piczo.com
Cheers LES.

Could be a no. of things detent springs, worn or loose selector fork, worn syncromesh on 3rd . Worn bearings. Also check oil. It I am not mistaken 6 cylinder had a beefed up gearbox so will be more expensive for major work.

Thanks for the replies as soon as the money hit my sweaty palm I regretted selling Mushy and have regretted it ever since, however that is now in the past and I am now in the future with what could be an expensive problem and if anyone out there can give me a bit of their hard earned knowledge I would be eternally grateful. The oil levels where supposed to have been checked by The Tarts previous owner and on the 250 mile drive back from Devon I had no probs with the gear box.I will check the oil and keep you informed.
Cheers LES.

:( I am by no means a mechanic but I used to do as much as possible on Mushy mainly due to cash flow and did at one stage have the gear box out to fit a new lay shaft so it wouldn't be too daunting a task to do it myself but I would like to know what the most likely cause of the problem is before I take the box out,if it is just a case of needing oil I can live with it jumping out of second. If I get the chance tommorrow I will do the oil and let you know.
Cheers LES.

I have checked the gear box oil level and that's fine and whilst I was scrauming under The Tart I found one of the U bolts that hold the axle to the springs had come off which explains the knocking I got going down some local lanes,Oh what a pleasure it is to own a Land Rover.Any more ideas on the gear box before I take it out would be appreciated.
Cheers LES.

I'd go along with B-Bs diagnosis, I've only had esperience with the LT77 box. Though I reckon it's likely to be in the selector department rather than synchro. IE selector forks, shaft and/or detent springs. Though if you've got it apart and you've got the pullers and the gear to put the bearings back on the shaft, you might as well put new baulk rings in 'cos these are likely to be worn as well.

Hows it going Lecky? Just thought of you when I was putting mine back together. Has your gearbox got similar synchros to the LT77? If so then have a look at the slippers that hold the outer ring in place.

Not good I'm afraid I have just had to have a new clutch in my car and a solicitors bill dropped nicely through the letter box at the same time so I am going to have to live with the gear box for now,but I'm not bitter and twisted:mad: .Should be fun towing the caravan next weekend through Sheffield during rush hour on our way to the Peak District for a bit of laning and a lot of beer!!!
Thanks for your help will keep you posted eventually.
