I have a Discovery 94 300Tdi and the other day I was driving along as usual on a smooth surface when all of a sudden my front passenger door flew open . My heart just about stopped! I got out and shut it properly, thinking that I probably hadn"t done so to start with, but unfortunately it has now done the same thing again twice so it is a problem I have to sort urgently. Has anyone out there had the same problem or would any of you know what may be causing this?

Thanks in anticipation of your replies.

I had a similar thing with the drivers door and suffered for 6 months. Worst for me was happening at 70mph. Needed new pants after that!

I eventually chased the problem down to the window runner pressing against the lock mechanism. It would put pressure against it and prevent the return spring from 'resetting' the latch so it wouldn't shut properly and when you opened it it wouldn't shut sometimes and bounced back open.

It's not much to sort, put a few washers at the bottom mount on the runner in the door. I ended up with about 10mm of washers before it was consistently sorted.

That's my experience on this. Sometimes a bit of wd40 would sort it.

My drivers door has done this for a while now...tie a scarf on handle and sit on it was my solution. Then I went for the one handed driving round roundabouts whilst holding door closed approach. Finally went for the new door lock mechanism from Hamsterberg and fitted by Deasy approach ..perfect :)

Thanks for the replies folks, The window runner is something I'll definitely look into. Unfortunately my motor sits out in the open most of the time and I also have to cross causeways in bad weather at times and it's had it's fair share of sea water being flung all over it so rust is an issue. I have noticed a gap between the window rubber and the window just above the door handle so wonder if corrosion may be the culprit here. I will strip the door down and have a gander.

As for sitting on a scarf that's tied to the door 110 woman, I'd need one of those Dr Who scarves if I was to do that, you know, the ones that are about 15ft long!!

Bunnymofo, that's decent of you to offer. I'm just considering going for another 300 Tdi because the door isn't the only issue with my motor, it also has a hinge on the bonnet that has broken free of the bulkhead and that is no easy fix from what I can see. I assume it means getting the dashboard out!

If I decide to go for another 300 Tdi then I will use my old one as a donor car, almost seems a shame though because the engine still pulls like a train.

However, I now know where there are 2 good doors so I'll be back to you if I decide to go down that road. Thanks.

Sadly it's the bulkhead that's had it. The bolts and a chunk of metal off the bulkhead are still attached to the hinge so a plate needs welding into the bulkhead so that the hinge can be re attached!
