Hi guys I have a 300tdi disco which after changing the fan belt has developed a screem. I have changed the water pump pulley which has reduced the screem slightly. A quick spray of WD40 removes the screem. however it is back within 5 minutes. I have tryed several belts, all the same.

Any suggestions?

i have the same prob wiv my defender.fine til the belt was changed, then for no reason its squeeling like a two dollar hooker!I've heard this is a characteristic of the 300tdi in either disco or defender, the innexplicable sqeeking belts!I ended up having all pulleys replaced, and ya know what sorted it out, the fookin belt was upside down!now it jus does a chirpy whistle.....fookin thing....

loosen of the fan belt tensioner bolt and insert a 1p pence piece or washer in the 9 o' clock position and then re-tighten the tesioner bolt. Job done squealing gone.

No I am not joking. Give it a go it'll only cost you a penny.

Hi Ratty,

The bolt that holds the tensioner to the block?

are the tensioners known for pushing the belt to one side?

YES.

I don't really know to be honest. If you replace the tensioner the problem still comes back after a couple of months. The penny trick I was told by somebody on here. I did it to mine and never had a problem with it for the following 18 months that I had my 300tdi. I would say it is more a case of allowing the belt to get a better grip by slightly twisting it.

Glad I found this thread how to get rid of the squealing fan belt.. At times couldn't hear the engine, had it fixed this pm, luckily, though belt was changed a year ago, it was in the process of breaking up, so result, due to spending a penny got rid of the squael and averted a broken belt Can't say thank you enough.
