The remote key had a hole in it and fob would only open the doors sometimes.
So I bought a new blank on ebay and cleaned the electronics and put the board into the new case.
So far so good
The buttons all worked and the car started with the old key case which still had the transponder chip in it.
Then i cut out the transponder and put it into the new case thinking that I'd hold the new key case (with the remote electronics and the transponder close to the barrel) and use the old key blade until I get the new one cut
Now I can only turn the key to the start position sometimes and the car won't crank
Any hints?

Had something like this when I upgraded to a flip key,had to get the chip as near the blade as it would go for it to be picked up, my ignition switch is in center near gear lever.

Think that's it
I've put the chip back into the old case with the correct blade and it's ok.
I'll get the new blade cut and see how that does.
I went to the 'locksmiths' today and he told me that the switches on the board were faulty.
There actually aren't any switches as such in it. Theres a pcb with switch pattern on it and the circuit is made with a bit of plastic locally coated with conductive material.
Zero confidence now.
Another locksmith next week.
Anyone know any good burglars near Belfast?
