Shouldnt do.
Prop off
Rear shafts out - at least 100mm or so to clear the diff
Undo the bolts
Hammer smack
Out it comes

no it should prise out , i rebuild salisbury axles and havent used a spreader in 30 years

Well that's disappointing. I was rather looking forward to having a Salisbury axle at some point and having a massive piece of equipment to get the mechanism out.
