running rough

the beast has started to run a bit rough over the last week and sounds like she blowing but theres nothing wrong with the exhuast. from cold in the morning she backfires slightly and is now doing 10mpg. any ideas of things i can check over or do myself this weekend to help her back on track as money is real tight when you got baby stuff to buy (i keep tellin the mrs that the rangie's more important than the baby thats 6 weeks away but she doesnt agree)
 
Sounds like an air leak,are there any perished vacuum hoses,or a split in the main inlet hose.The blowing could be a split manifold which is covered by the heatshields,this will cause poor idling issues and poor MPG too.
 
Yes,check all those hoses around the inlet manifold area,and listen through a piece of hose to try to indentify where the blowing is from.Do this before you try removing the heatshields from the manifolds as they can be difficult to remove,esp on the Rh side of the engine.
 
hi folks gonna look over the things suggested this afternoon by the way i forgot to mention that it has a bad smell of petrol fumes by the exhuast so i think its running to rich but have been told that this might be cuased by the same problems
