Hi all

I could do with a bit of advice about this.....

Background: TD4 Freelander, 105K on the clock, bought in Dec 2016 with 80K on the clock (so 25K since then. Its had the turbo hoses changed and rear brakes done. Recently I gave it a major service, oil, filters etc etc, including new fuel pump & filter (wheel arch pump) breather modification, sedimenter cleared etc. All went well.

Symptoms: it has a fault (it was present before the above service..its just getting worse though) that feels like fuel starvation at start up as it takes a bit to get it going on all cylinders (although it does fire on some of them). And ..occasionally the engine feels like its going to stop, the revs drop and it almost stops, and then fires back into life. When its going it goes well. There is no sign of oil in the coolant, water in the oil so I am discounting head gasket problems.

I suspect its a fuel supply problem, but am at a loss as to what (and how ) to check next.
As it works well (when it works) I am guessing it could be an injector problem (as the high pressure pump seems to be working). How do I test the injectors.. as a home mechanic ? Or should I look elsewhere first ?

Cheers

1. Try a dose of injector cleaner
2. New set of glow plugs
2. New HP pump pressure regulator O-ring.

If these don't solve it, you could try unplugging the injectors individually to find the dud one, or do a leakback test.

Thanks for the reply.

I have tried injector cleaner (full bottle in 5 litres of fuel) and the a full bottle in a full tank. Made no difference.
I don't think a new set of glow plugs will help as it dies when the engine is hot....not just on starting.
I'll try a leak back test as I have a length of hose & some clips that I can use. What defines a bad a injector...how much fuel to leak back over say 1 minute of running ?

Cheers

I can only go by my experience which I am the fist to admit isn't a lot not had my td4 for long but could it be a sensor ? I had similar problems to you and it turned out to be the map sensor ,I am still surprised at how something so small can give so much trouble

Fuel rail sensor/harness is a good place to start and can cause random running issues. The MAF can also cause similar problems.
Fuel spill is best measured and a comparison made between cylinders. There's no definite volume per time of running data available.
