I have a 2000 disco auto, previously i had a toyota hilux surf and i ran it on kerasine in emergancies. i was just wouldering if any had run there disco on this at any time. it is 28 seconds the same viscosity as desiel

As long as you throw some extra lube in with it such as used engine oil it will be fine ( although slightly illegal ) I had a long conversation with a MOT tester and he said it is almost impossible to trace using the probe that the department of transport use for seeing if you are using cherry:)

Another So called expert that knows fookall then. The "probe" they use takes a sample of your fuel and runs a sophisticated chemical analysis and can determine the exact chemical composition of your fuel If it doesn't match the composition of Road fuel diesel your in the ****.

So what about bio fuel?veg oil and whatever else is used in making bio fuel at home. The bloke is extremely knowledgeable but in this free democratic society you are entitled to your opinion

Has anybody on the forum actually had a sample of thier fuel taken ? and if so what was done ?

cheers

I have when I lived in Wales. it was quite common to see them stopping & dipping vehicles.

They test for the following chemicals.

  • Coumarin – a UK marker
  • Quinizarin – a UK marker
  • Solvent Yellow 124, a marker used in all EU Member States.
If they find these chemicals they know you've had Red diesel, Kerosene or other duty exempt fuel. in your fuel system. you see there not testing to see what fuel your running on. They're looking for reduced duty/duty free fuel, in your tanks. If they find any trace your in the ****e.

Your MOT expert doesn't know what he's talking about. Road fuel diesel doesn't have any of these marker chemicals in it. Kerosene does. So how can it be indistinquishable??

Im not debating this either way cus i dont know, but...

What if you bought a vehical that someone has ran on kero and the authorities pick up traces of it in your tank. How would you ever know and how could they take and crush your car if you have never done anything wrong??

If your on your way home from the sellers house. You'll be fine But if you've owned it 6 months had put a couple of thousand miles on it since the last MOT. Your gonna have a hard time explaining it.

the other way of arguing the point at the side of the road is to have a bottle of fuel injector cleaner fluid with you as they have kero in them

Kerosene is much more viscous than diesel, and as a result will not do a good job of lubricating your fuel pump.

Cheers for clearing that up I'll tell him he's a thick tw?t when I see him:)

I thought that it was the lubricity that lubricates the pump not viscosity as that roughly speaking is its thickness. This is why properly made bio diesel is better for your pump than even low sulphur diesel as it is the sulphur that does the lubrication. Hence when it is low sulphur it makes it low lubrication so they now add 5% bio to add lubricity.

Problem with bio is there are to many dodgy poor quality bios available in this country. Germany sell gallons of the stuff and VW will give a full manufacturers warranty even on bio so this must prove bio is not bad.

where yer get yer info about sulphur being a lubricant?

its melting point is over 100°c

ad be interested in seeing that in writing from some notable sighintust

ill add my bit to this debate cos i know a bit about running on red and being dipped by customs from previous experience . there is a chemical marker in red diesel but when customs knocked my door about 18 months ago ( an ex girlfriend grassed me up ) they dipped the tank on my peugeot 406 diesel and thats all the probe was is a small soft clear plastic bulb with a thin length of pipe with a 1 way valve on the end that they squeeze the bulb and just look at the colour of the diesel that gets sucked out of the tank , they didnt check the chemical properties or even smell it or anything like that and i had stopped using red only 2 tankfulls before .

Things must have moved ona bit since then. I've been dipped the same way you have. But I'd never used red at all. But they also use an electronic tester that basically "sniffs" the fuel sample it takes, looking for the chemicals that are added to reduced duty/dutyfree, fuel oils. They get real upset if they dip a petrol vehicle by mistake as it buggers the machine and it has to be recalibrated.

Cheers for all the info/arguments/etc... So what I think you're all telling me is that if I add some lube to the Kerasine I should be o.k and my Landy will run on it without breaking down. P.S Customs, shmustoms, I live in the back & beyond in deepest darkest yorkshire! :p
