I have loaned my 90 to a family member who's own vehicle is off the road. Got it back for a night to do some stuff and went to put some fuel in and could smell Kero from the tank. I know he has some lying around as I got him some from a mate who was getting rid of a tank full. I gave it to him for his heating, not to put in my landy. I know it is less lubricating and burns at a higher temp than derv, so dropped 20ltrs of VO in the tank. I normally run it on 50/50 derv/VO. Not too chuffed with him at the mo....

particularly if yu get stopped and have it dipped .

Yep.....thats just one of the reasons I aint feckin happy. "It wasn't me mister plod/vosa man. Honest" "Oh thats ok then sir. You can be on your way then. Have a nice day" I don't see that somehow.

Good job you noticed! His car isnt off the road due to a blown engine with running on that stuff all the time is it...?

No...something to do with a brake booster. its a Land Cruiser. The part from Toyota costs........wait for it...........................£3100...

Don't give it back...you trusted them...they didn't take care of your stuff...endex...they had their chance and they took the proverbial

+1
HE'S running the risk of having YOUR car crushed, plus big fines for whoever is driving at the time.

Drain and flush the tank, change the fuel filter and run the return line into a can until it's purged.
Best to be sure.

I've been hearing about people running their cars on kerosene a lot lately where I am. How bad is it really if it's run with some veg oil to lube it?

Think of it this way, if you get caught HMRC will calculate the amount in the tank (% of non duty paid fuel) compared to the mileage done since you owned the vehicle, then charge you something around 85p for every liter they think you have used, on top of this is the fine, a LARGE fine.

Then they turn the vehicle into a compact, the most compact of all things cube shaped.

Oh and it will also wreck your injection pump and burn the valves out in the long run.

Go on, make their day.

We aren't being very helpful, are we .

As stated, don't give it back. If he can't treat you vehicle with respect, then he doesn't deserve to borrow it.

Well HMRC isn't applicable here in Ireland but I'd say it's a similar offense as those running agri diesel here which is a fine. It's fairly bad of someone to take a loan and use illegal fuel.

I have thought of it that way FFS. Thats why I'm so bloody mad. Its now my problem though, Isn't it.

i wouldn't worry too much about being caught. it'll weaken and if stopped say it was the PO.

tell your family member he's a prick for not asking and don't lend him anything again or get him any more kero.

Ill be surprised if theres more than 5 old land rovers in the uk that havnt been run on red at one point. Vosa know this. Its unlikely they will do you unless they have intel your running on red and find red in the tank.

Mines never been on the farm yet the filter was stained red.... Turned out the previous owner was a digger driver/owner

That said so was my berlingo when i bought but then it came in from the sticks on the north west of scotland.

Fair points and encouraging. Thanks guys.

Dilemma I have though is he has been very good to me. You don't lend your Landy to just anyone eh? Don't want to fall out over it either though. But he has to be told.

just say something like,' have you put any dodgy fuel in the tank as it's running funny?'.

if he admits it, say 'you can't do that, they'll crush it if they dip the tank and it buggers the engine'
