So, having just finished rebuilding the 90 on a new galv chassis, I thought it'd be right to drive some of the Cotswolds (few) green lanes... having got a suitable distance from home, the throttle gained a life of its own! It was like a dodgy cruise control - just started accelerating all on its own, then after a while, went back to normal... This happens at least once every 5 mins for about 30 secs to a min.

It's a 2.5NA btw. the rebuild went really smoothly, except that the bleed screw on the injector pump lost its thread - I put a little loctite and bonded it in place with a little liquid gasket to seal on the outside. Bodge i know, but i'm scrapping the engine as soon as i can save up for a 200tdi... I wonder if a little air in the system could cause this problem? really don't want to have to replace the injector pump!

cheers, Liam

First thought was that it was burning it's own oil, but usually once they do that and the engine speeds up they carry on until they either explode or you stall the engine (turning off the ignition doesn't do the trick)

Wonder if something less frightening like sticking throttle cable or mechanism?

I thought that, but pulled over while it was doing it, and the cable was fine. replaced it recently (with a blue box one admittedly) and it's working no problems. I adjusted the tickover about 2k miles ago, and that was all looking ok...

Oil levels are good and hasn't needed a top up for a while

Update - bled the system again and it's still doing it... There was a little air there, but I wonder if a bit of the thread from the casing might be stuck in there. Sucks to be so near to finishing and then to have a set back like this!

Would be surprised if the speeding up was due to air in the fuel systwem - would more likely show itself as slowing down and then going back to normal

Not pesonally aware of over fuelling issues

Sorry - not sure what else to suggest - sure someone else will be along soon

couple thoughts

would air getting in (pipes/pickup) cause it to do this or would it just fart and underev? I'm not sure it would, but if you swapped the chassis, then i guess you changed the pipes.. check the joins.

if it is starting to burn it's own oil.. where from? pull the breather and see if it's heavy and misting.

How worn is the engine, pistons worn, etc? Worthwhile doing a compression test to rule them out? Valve seals?

Would a worn injector pump cause this?

The only two things that deliver oil into the cylinders are the injector pump and the injectors themselves.

If you are suddenly getting more fuel fed through initially I would have a look at your injector return system to see if there is any form of blockage or restriction there, as it should flow freely either back to the tank or into your fuel filter, depending on how your system has been set up.

Should there be a blockage, the return will create a small amount of back pressure in the injectors which could account for the short bursts of increased engine speed.

Hope this helps.

Not burning any oil, valve stem seals are all new, piston rings are good. Engine is running fine otherwise. Everything was fine until I did the chassis swap. Could be a worn injector pump, I'm going to look into how much it'd be to replace...

sure someone was quoted 200quid for a series one to be refurbed.. check the series forum for the company

Cheers for the reply oldseadog, didn't think about the return pipe, will check that out when I get a chance.

My na used to rev its tits off when seriously low on fuel and then run out of fuel. My 200 tdi does rev up when seriously low but nowhere near as much as my old Na did.

Found it in the end! I'd changed out loads of little bits before I finally came across the non return valve on the return pipe from the injector pump had seized closed. I'd pulled the pipe of but left the valve attached to the filter housing so never clocked onto it.
Running it for 30 miles like that to my mates house finally screwed the injector pump itself so was £130 to replace that too (although it was trashed anyway and I needed an excuse), but at least it's sorted now! Cheers for the responses from all involved :)
