hi, as the title says, ive just started getting a rubbling vibration under my feet that i can feel when accelerating in 4th. what could this be?
i was thinking maybe UJ's but why only 4th gear??

cheers james

So you've nor checked the UJ's yet then?

LOL, mine also once started doing it in third, until it got bad enough to fall apart ... get them checked soon ... and check the rear prop donut that connects the rear prop to the diff ... ;)

just been out and underneath. tbh paul im new to landys so dont really know what im looking for with regard to how a uj should be etc. gonna go down to the local landy garage and ask them for there opinion on it

OK, the front propshaft has a yoke and UJ at each end, that connects to the yoke on the diff and transfer box in/output flanges. The UJ is in the shape (roughly) of a cross, and should rotate reasonably freely and smoothly about each axis, but shouldn't move in any other direction. Use a bar or long screwdriver to try and move them If they're wobbly or loose, then they're shagged.

On the rear propshaft there's a Yoke and UJ at the transfer box which is checked in the same way. From the rear prop to the rear diff there's a three-pronged rubber cush-drive 'donut', which connects to a three pronged flange. This is often cracked or perished and can give almost exactly the same noises/feel as a broken UJ.

got the problem sorted. ended up taking it to the local land rover garage as i had to leave for college at 2:30. turned out to be a knackered uj and seized front prop. 139 quid lighter but hey atleast its done. would have probably done it myself but i only discovered it today and i had to travel to hampshire so needed it done asap.

Same sympton our Disco has now shown in the last couple of weeks plus 4th gear is hard to find when downshifting (having to drop down to 3rd sometimes), not long since fitted a new transfer box & recon gearbox (had to take it back next day as the prop was not tightened properly!!)

Could this error whilst re-fitting the prop have knackered the UJ?

Just what I need b4 xmas too:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Nice one. No shame taking it to a garage, time and work sometimes mean the smallest jobs just can't get done.

had similar problem with mine, changed gear box oil, and was a lot better, not perfect though, later found out that gear select bias plate was bust too, living with it for now till i got some work and money to pay for it.

Dunno for sure, but sounds probable.
