Rubber boot floor & track rod/drag link

Finally got all welding done and took the disco in for the MOT.

Failed on a drag link end and a track rod end. I've ordered:

As I didn't know if I needed a LH as well? I saw the PN for the drag link end and the track rod were the same for the RH thread so got 2 of them and one of LH in case. Are they going to be the right parts?

Secondly, I've taken the standard rubber & foam liner off the boot floor to do the welding. I guess this has the same problem as the range rovers as it collects water and aids rot. What does everyone else put down under the carpet instead? I didn't wanna leave it out completely if possible. Any alternatives or tips?
 
Ive completly removed the sound proofing from all of my Disco and just put the carpet back down. Its a little bit baggy in places but it drys out realy fast when you lift the mats. I used a wire brush in an angel grinder and did the whole floor from front to back and then used a rust retardant primer. I was amazed how bad the corrosion was in the front foot wells (big flaky bits in places and the whole floor covered in varying amounts of rust with no paint left!)... get that crappy sponge stuff out and stop your floors disolving. If your worried about the noise level it realy aint that bad give it a go and see.
 
I've put down two or three coats of Zinc rich primer and a couple coats or spray paint to finish the floor off. I think I'll do what you suggested and just slap the carpets back in - wasn't too bothered about noise just wondered is the jump seats in the back will sit ok on just the carpet if there's no padding under them?
 
I've put my rubber mats back in. Not convinced by the mat trapping water arguament as mine seemed to have rusted from the under side up. Re: track rod/drag link, I think you should have correct parts. I did mine in September, think they werboth RH thread.
 
I lifted my front passenger footwell carpet because it was wet and the spongy foam layer was just like a sponge, I pressed against it and the water poured out.

The floor was mint though, virtually no rust, just some tiny bits I have coated with Hammerite rust treatment.

If I remove the passenger seat will that foam come out seperately or is it one large piece?

I have been jetashing the underside of the Disco a lot lately so was gonna check if the water is getting in somehow. The floor is too clean and the water is just starting to smell, like its only been there a week or so.
 
It's all one big piece - unlike the range rover classic one, you can remove it without cutting holes in it so you could always put it back in.

Mine was really bad and you can see the rust spots on the underside of the matting where they've stained the foam.

Think I'll just leave it out and see what happens - I can always put it back in if needs be. Want to make sure my welding keeps the water out first!

Thanks for the info V8 disco biscuit - I was hoping that was the case - I've got a few spares at home for my old Rangey that I ordered in error over the years.
 
I just did my ES rear floor and theres no way the sponge is going back in.I plan to sound proof it with (if its still available) DUM DUM.It came in self adhesive sheets or brush on and was commonly used in vehicle interiors in the 70s to cut down vibration and road noise on large,flexible panels.Failing that maybe some spray foam filler (but will this hold water in situe?).After any soundproofing I hope to cut a sheet of 9mm tanalised plywood to shape to give a flat suface that is friendly to my poor old knees,when the carpet is on,anyway......
 
That stuff sounds alright, might give it a go. Considered getting some bags of silica gel and placing them under the foam matting but I doubt they'll be able to shift that much moisture.
 
Just had a look on e bay and there is something similar called DYNAMAT in the US and a UK version for about £13 for 100cm x 60cm....quite pricey to do the lot.Search google for the brush on dumdum,loads of people stock it and their sites might have some soundproof matting too.....

...another thought,closed cell foam wont hold water (though it may trap condensation and pevent evapouration) so you could use camping bed roll mats,"karrimat" if you want to pay lots,or a cheap one is a fiver or less and should do the job
 
Got it MOT'd finally! Bought the thing on 21st september so it's taken a while.

For future reference, those part numbers I quoted are correct - the track rod ends and nearside drag link ball joints are all RH thread and the offside drag link is a LH thread.
 
Re the boot floor and the sound absorbing rubber mat.

I first came across this on our first Disco '93 Tdi200, when I lifted the the carpet and mat, there were holes in the floor you could drive a truck through !!

After repairing the metal floor the rubber sponge never went back in!!

Last week I took out the mats from our current two TDi300's - on one there was a little corrosion but nothing to worry about although the mat was soaking in places. On the other is was almost perfectly dry.

I will not put that piece of dog doodoo back in any of our vehicles as it's just plain wrong in my book.

My plan is to create a marine-ply fitted floor, which will allow ventillation via the corrogations in the steel floor. This will also support the second row folding seats as they are currently missing about 5mm of rubber where the seat feet are.

This will allow me to keep a close eye on the floor.
