What's the verdict on the reliability of the new style RR - do random
bits still drop off whilst being mechanically sound or has the quality
really improved ?
The Amazon is due to be changed but based on the experience I had with
a 98 Disco I'm tempted to stay with Toyota...the only possible
downside being if they bring a new Amazon out which will stuff the
residuals. Anyone know what's planned ?

cheers

I would think your best bet is to ask at Alt.fan.landrover. I have always
had doubts that increasing the complexity of machines designed for use
hostile terrain is a silly idea I would hate to be stuck in the Kalahari
waiting for a dealer to send out a technician to reset the computer because
a sensor wire fell off ( and if the new motors are like Classic it happens
all to often)

You should read the comment from "James S" after the review of the Toyota
Landcruiser at this link:

Interesting!

I'd be tempted with that too. I gave up on Land Rovers after a long run
of vehicles getting more unreliable. The maintenance bill for my last
Land Rover exceeded the value of the vehicle year on year and it got
ditched when the parts installed a year ago started to fail within the
year. I'd had enough.

The current Ford is as reliable as heck. It's less of an off-roader than
the Land Rover but nothing breaks on it and maintenance bills are £100
every 10,000 miles. Although much derided, Ford seems to now have
reliablility on a par with the Japanese makes, presumably having learned
a lot from Mazda (many of the Ford 4x4 parts are Mazda). By reputation
Toyota are better again, ISTR Land Cruiser reviews tend to state that
against is the ancient feel, thirst and bulk and for is the fact that
few if any owners can recall having a breakdown.

My neighbour sticks with Land Rover but he keeps the local garage
permanently busy.

Personally I don't think much can be done to hurt Toyota residuals.
I bought an 80 series Land Cruiser in 2000 for just over £16k and
changed it recently for an Amazon, my old one is currently up for sale
for £12,995 - three grand depreciation over five years is pretty good in
my book!
