After 5000 miles making a tapping noise wich got worse my p38 dt blew
its head gasket the other week...plucked up the courage to pull the head
and the gasket had blown into the thermostat chamber (accounting for the big boil up at the time). On close inspection of the head...Its flat but there are hairline cracks around the swirl chamber inserts and a deep crack on no 2. Looks like its been spitting compressed air through this and into the coolant.
Took it to a local repairer for a look...its scrap...price for a new bare casting (no valves or swirl chambers) £700 + associated work + vat
'Oh Dear!'
Eventually managed to find a head off a bmw 525td for £160 delivered (sigh of relief!) from a scrapper. The cam looks different so am
currently swapping the cam and tappets off the old head onto the replacement head. Might have it back together this week, with the aid of a trusty assistant to help lift it in square-wish me luck!
