Hi i have a 2003 range rover vogue 4.4 (getting divorced was easier than owning this bugger !! ) i have had a transfer box change ( due to humming/grinding noise when running above 30mph and voilent shuddering every so often) had a new recon gearbox, as well, now after the transfer box change the noise has virtually gone, and the shuddering has gone, at speed but, when turning sharply left or right (from moving off) i get the feeling as if the wheel are stuck/sticking and get suddering goes after the turn ? anyone got ideas or had this happen to them.....also when ever i go over pothole etc i get a large rattle from the passenger side front suspension, but, can find nothing loose or worn (nor can the 4 garages that have tried and failed to find this rattle ?) i will win in the end !!

Sounds like the VCU has seized:eek:

hi thanks silly question whats a VCU !!

Viscous Coupling Unit, it acts as a centre diff lock. If it has seized it will give the symptoms you describe due to transmission wind up. To check it, jack one front wheel off the ground, with a great deal of effort you should be able to slowly turn the wheel. If it will not turn, drop the front prop off until you get the VCU replaced or you will destroy the front diff:eek:

many thnaks for the advice, this only happened after changing the trsnafer box ? silly question where is the VCU / thanks steve

Surprise Surprise, it's on the front of the transfer box. If you replacement transfer box was secondhand it probably came with a duff VCU. If you still have your other transfer box, the one off that may be OK.
Download RAVE and you will see where it is. Not a difficult job to change by all accounts.

hi oh deer !! it was a reman transfer box at £500 plus £250 fitting, now starts the fun getting it changed...i wish i could find a real garage !! thnaks steve

Whoa, first you need to prove it's the VCU, if it is, take the car back to where the transfer box was done and demand they fix it.

I have just noticed, you are talking about an L322, not sure if thay are the same as a P38, I might be talking rubbish!

hi i agree, but, you know what the drill will be !! think it may be time to become and ex-range rover vogue owner ( 2nd time round) its just not worth all the hassle !! thanks again steve

i dont think l322 use vc ithink they are all electronic must have front cv or diff centre fault, they are prone to anti roll bar links and lower arm ball joints
