Hi all,

Just wondering whether anyone has fitted replacement front seats in their Defender from a Rover 200/216. If so, were there any difficulties with fitment, issues with clearance from the door, did the centre seat still fit etc.?

I have found someone wrecking Rovers, see:

Rover 200/216 parts | Trade Me

and as I have heard about people using Rover seats in Defenders before I thought I would see if anyone on here has tried seats out of either of these models.

A very tidy looking set-up. Do you know if Rover 200's or 216's have seats the same shape as yours? (My knowledge of Rover cars is fairly limited)
yep should be the same

all we did was flatten front bracket so it sat flat on the seat box and the rear bracket we made up to fit the seat bracket i will see if i can find some older pics

this may help a bit

The 220 was more sporty than the others and better trims. The others tended to be velours which rub a lot specially in landy use as a guess. 220 could get half leather.

The half leather looks very nice, but seat covers can easily be fitted to prevent wear (Just won't look as flash). Was there any drilling into the seatbox required to fit the new seats?

yes but its very easy with lids removed

we made sure the passenger seat was on fixed bolts poking up thru the box this made access to the seat box easier as the seat just lifted off the bolts and they stayed in place 2 mins to take the seat out

if ya pay for me to come out to nz for a week i will fit them for ya..

and yes i also fitted waterproof seat covers but like ya say dont look as good

Be aware that it is now a requirement for mot that the drivers seat can be locked in at least two positions fore and aft. I spoke to the mot man last week as mine is due for mot tomorrow. Seat runners now fitted on drivers seat.

How does that work for old series motors then???

Afer looking at a few photos on the internet I have found that the Rover 220 coupe seats seem to be more Recaro-style as previously mentioned than the seats in Rover 216's. I will have to keep my out out for a 220 coupe being wrecked, as normal Rover seats (like those of almost all cars) would probably be too thick in the base and my knees would end up touching the steering wheel.
That seems to be the problem when finding replacement seats, Defender seats have very thin bases, and are quite a unique size, smaller than most seats, and narrow.

Vectra gsi seats. Recaro seats, some even have 12v seat heating ;) which all fender owner appreciate eh.

Just waiting on friend breaking one. They have flat runners too so should be ok fit.

Will be interested to see how these fit, keep us posted please (with pics if poss):D

Below is a rough guide of fitting the seats.

I completely removed the old seats and rails.

I offered up the new seats, and using the outer front existing fixing hole i temporarily bolted the drivers seat down. (passenger seat fixed on INNER front existing fixing point).

I then centre punched remaining front holes, and outer rear holes, ready to drill.

I prepared the bolts which were M10 x 50mm, by winding a nut fully down to the head.

I then inserted the prepared bolts from underneath and fixed with a nut and washer to create a stud effect. The rear bolt when inserted was angled downwards so using a hammer i angled the upstand backwards to allow the bolt to angle slighty upwards, which will allow the seat to slide onto them easier.

I then bolted the seats into position and all that's left to do is fix the inner rear down using an angle bracket bolted to the existing seat rail hole and the floor by drilling.
