Hi guys and girls.

So i bought a 57 freelander 2 just before Christmas. It came with a years gold AA warranty (which isn't worth the paper it's printed on but that's another story) I Had noticed a few problems that after Christmas I planned on getting sorted. One of which was irratic idle when stopped. So it would intermittently jump up on revs like I had hit the gas or when coming to a stop revs would drop down to about 500 like still in gear and about to stall but it never did. Not even owning it for a month it wouldn't start one cold morning. The garage I bought it from had the car over two weeks to try sorting the issue. They have put a whole new turbo in (although I'm not sure where on the engine it is to check this) and they have replaced the inlet manifold at the front as swirl flaps where in a bad way. The egr valve also looks to have been replaced too as it's shinning bright! They returned it to me saying it was sorted. It unfortunately has not solved the issue. Now I've read that the throttle body could be the cause of my issue and i was surprised to find it directly under the new egr valve and it was indeed In a filthy state the sensor was covered almost entirely in soot. So I took it to pieces this afternoon and cleaned it up lovely. Confident that I had sorted my problems. After taking her out tonight to see if I had I was gutted to find it still doing it!!! Please guys any ideas what is left to be causing the problem??

Cheers oliver

Throttle housing is not underneath the EGR valve as it is on the rear of the engine and the throttle is at the front

I suspect an EGR valve but with out proper diagnosis it’s just a guess!

Thanks for the replies! Any idea what the throttle body is bolted too then? And is it easy to get to the egr valve? Any links to a how to page or anything?

Thanks again

With complex modern diesels, it's best to get a diagnostic read done. You could be cleaning and replacing parts all over and still not fix it. Alternatively officially reject the vehicle, returning it to the garage you bought it and ask for your money back.

I had a diagnosis done to please the AA warranty which they then came out with the old ware and tear spill so that's why the garage carried out work. There was alot of error codes to be fair but none that seem too obvious as to the actual issue.

I've been through a lot of cars in my 4-5 years of driving I've had new low miles and old high mile cars all let me down I seem to have bad luck. I don't want the messing around of getting rid of another car to get yet another with other issues. I love the car comfatble quiet good looking. Just trying to sort stuff myself if at all possible as I'm not scared of getting my hand dirty. But jobs I can't do or will cost too much so early on in ownership then the garage can put right ☺️

Teddy wood - leak back test what do you mean?

Mine has a rough idle but only with the air con/heater on, I turn that off when sitting at traffic light as it goes to normal when I do that

The idle speed can be adjusted to compensate for slight imbalances like that.
I altered mine from 725 RPM to 760 RPM, which made a big difference to the idle smoothness.
