ROOKIE NEEDS HELP!-EGR Electronic control unit

hey every1.
WHile removin the middle seat in my D90, I found a lead coming from the unit under it. thought nothin of it til I turned over the seat I removed and found a lil black box on th underside with a plate with this written on it,
"DIESEL EGR ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT ERR 6233 TYPE NO. 4115, with a female connection for the lead coming from under the protective plate that the seat was covering.ANY IDEAS wat it is, why its not connected!!!!???????I'm planning on putting a cubby in its place.

I have a 300tdi which was exactly the same. By disconnecting this box your EGR system should be made inoperable. The exhaust gas recirculation device is only fitted to reduce emissions in certain conditions but is not required in the UK, popular opinion seems to think it's best to disconnect the system totally by fitting a EGR blanking plate which should ensure the system is definately by-passed, it sometimes will improve the performance of the engine. A very simple job.

your d90 should be a > 02 model. 02 and beyond if EU3 compliant have an electronic connector going to the EGR.

by blanking off the EGR, you can get slightly greater power at the middle but at the expense of the enviroment. hence if yours was blanked off, the wires could have been disconnected.

the egr valve is located under the engine cover, at the right side of the engine (from the driver seat) towards the front.
