I recently bought a '03 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 XTRA Cab and I am
experiencing heavy chipping or 'sandblasting' directly in front of the
rear wheel well. This truck came directly from the dealer with
265/75/16 BFG tires and factory mud flaps. I ride on paved roads and
I noticed this damage during this past winter. My dealership told me
they don't know what's causing it and '...they've never seen it
before'. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this problem or if
there is anything I can do since my dealership won't help. Thanks

They must not sell many Tacomas, considering that happens to every
single one of them ever made. Your options are to put running boards on
or go to a pin striping place and get vinyl panels made in either clear
or color matched to your paint and apply them to the affected area. I
have a black vinyl strip across the front of my black hood, no one knows
it's there but it sure does stop the rock chips without the need for a
big ugly deflector or rediculous looking Bra.

For what it's worth ... there is a protective coating that
bodyshops/paintshops can apply.
