Revs limited

Just had to power pack jump start my defender. Drove ok for two miles and then was left at just over idle to help charge the battery. 20 minutes later there appeared to be a slightly higher tappet noise from the engine and it wouldn't rev to any height at all and i've had to limp back to home.

Any ideas please.

98 300tdi

Erm wiltshire will confirm this but aren't the accelerators on 300s fly by wire? If so then that's probably knackered.

Ain't connected to the engine. TD5s and TDCis are fly by wire but I can't remember if the 300 was.

I ain't got a clue why that would allow the engine to still run at lower revs. I made it home, but at a trundle.

Because it would tickover but if the accelerator wasn't working it wouldn't rev. This conversation is pointless until someone tells us if they are fly by wire or not.

later 300's did have an ECU and a digital throttle. It could be that. or a slipped cable.

Right so now we need to know whether you have a throttle cable or not. You'll have to find that out.

i did on mine..

There's definately a throttle cable as i've revved the engine from under the bonnet using it.

The engine did rev when throttle pressed down, but revs wouldn't climb significantly.

To let you know, the throttle cable is located to the left of the engine coming out of the pedal box. If you follow the cable to find the linkages and check them.

So it's probably the linkages if you can rev the engine by hand.

Too late and too dark to go check the motor at the roadside. That and the fact it's minus 6 here just now.

I changed my track rod end today in minus 2 I've got almost 2 feet of snow now.

Had another look this morning and even using the carb itself to rev the engine, it won't climb above a certain point and what sounds like some kind of relay, (a high tappet noise), is not happy and seems to be inhibiting the revs from climbing.

It's a hybrid obviously..

Ok guys, not the carb, the throttle linkage to the engines fuel supply. We don't all work on landrovers, some of us just own them for other needs.
