A friend has just bought a Series 3 and wants to fit reversing lights. Is there a way to install a switch on the gearbox?
Were they ever fitted from new?

I made one for mine but it was a loooong time ago maybe 1994.
I recall (if you remove the transmission tunnel) a tin plate that moved in a certain direction when reverse was selected. I used a simple door switch and a bracket to earth the circuit and operate the light.
Memory is very vague though...

Mine certainly had one, but it was a CSW, so don't know if it was standard. From memory, mine had a switch that screwed through the plate that sticks up on the transfer box to cover the back of the gearbox selector space, and I'm sure that all the transfer boxes would be drilled and tapped for one. A quick look on Google images shows people fitting one to the steel bracket for the gear lever, but I think that the proper way is a lot quicker.
