Hey all... new problem!!

Couldn't find my exact query in previous threads!!

found out that my reverse lights didnt work, fitted 2 new one's since and both times i'v ended up with permanent rev-lights on. Is there something else i need to check before i bollock the supplier??

If the reverse light switch "switches to earth" check that the cable isn't frayed and is shorting out to earth between the lights and the switch

will check it more thoroughly when i get chance but i cant see any problem with it so far, cheers Mark :D

As Mark says ... it can really only be the switch or something to do with the earth on that switch. Double check you have the right part number, make sure it doesn't have Britpart written on it and if that's all ok you will need to look at cable tracing until you find an earth break or fray.
Is the car pink? :p

haha thanks Andy, its the next best colour... ice blue :lvgay-love-100:

i cant understand it, cant find a problem anywhere and i'v fitted 2 new switches which only leave the lights on perm, gonna let me father have a look on sat cos i swear i'm missing summit (which wouldn't be a first)! it def doesn't say britpart and its one of those "equivilent to" part no's so could well be cheap naff parts, in which case i will endeavour to send some pretty impressive, and bordering abusive, text to the seller :D

Are the lights on all the time i.e. any gear and neutral. have you checked if they go out if you put it into reverse?

Hiya Rimmer, yup i checked and they stay on perm, despite what gear or neutral, having to disconnect it. The switch that was in it when i bought it seems to have been re wired which is strange?? and it doesn't work anyway, but the new one's look fine??

That was obviously re-wired by the last owner when he had the same problem!
I just had a look around and found this on another site, hope it helps:

'I've just changed my reverse light switch on the freelander and when I came to test it, the reverse lights were on all the time. (the new switch was about 0.5mm longer than the old one!) Anyways, a thin washer sorted it, but obviously the computer didn't like the reverse switch being on (after I drove it off the drive) and now the HDC warning light is on all the time.'

Ring any bells? It may be that the previous owner had the same problem but didn't know it could be sorted with a washer so just tried to re-wire it.
Good Luck :)

To help narrow it down,
Are the lights off when the switch is disconnected?
If you remove the switch from the gearbox, connect wiring and operate it by hand do the lights switch on and off?

Andy your on m path mate, i said this to my dad when he tried to take over and he said, noooooo it couldn't be that simple  lol!! i'll get a brand new washer for it and see what happens!! thanks Andy :D

Chaser i havent tried that one, i'll def attempt it with one of the switches before i send it back, so i know which one, if any, are faulty

Pleased to be of service ... I'll come to you with any piercing questions I may have in the future ;)

that could work

While i'm asking silly questions... what dya think to the concept of using aryldite to mend the tailgate handle? instead of splashing out a ton for a new un??

Well you need to make sure you use the waterproof stuff and mix some extra hardener in with it. If it doesn't work then yes, a new one is the only answer. You'll get one on ebay or a breakers yard ... there are lots there ... :D:D
... sorry, couldn't resist.

hahaha funny thing is... there ARE loads at the breakers, there's an equicar 4x4 up the road from me and they get a couple in every week!!! even i knew to stay away from the 1.8 petrol :D
trouble is... they dont always have the grey trimmed one's in!!
i got the full aryldite with hardener etc, extra strong, i'll let ya know how it goes... fiver's better then £60-£100 eh
