Something Bugging me here. When I finally got my clutch bled, tried gears they were all a bit hard to engage but a bit better when warmed up, BUT couldn't get reverse, had a bit google and came up with reverse switch wound to far in, easy fix I thought so wound it out but still the same, more google and came up with Plunger, now I loosened the 2 bolts on first pic and hey presto got Reverse, do I just leave them at that ? But after looking at Diagram here page 323 http://www.retroanaconda.com/landrover/parts_books/110/4_gearbox_transfer_box_p300-397.pdf Mine looks like it is on upside down as on diagram number 17 plug is at bottom and mine is on the top in pic 2. Or does it not matter.

yours is fitted correctly but it needs removing stripping and cleaning the rebuild with fresh grease

OK Thanks, So take off strip apart, and grease it all up once cleaned. is there anything I should be looking out for whilst doing this,?
it should be springy but they get full of crap ans seize, doit on a rag or towel so you dont loose the detent ball ,undo the nut remove spring and ball then the plunger can be removed

Do I take the Whole thing off James or just go in by the big nut where dented ball and spring are.

OK Mate Thanks, Think I will take Tunnel off first to get at it easier, in case I drop something out of it.
if you can get it out with tunnel on do so
it locates 1st gear ie push stick across till it hits plunger then up,push against plunger for reverse

When I refit it do I tighten until I can hit reverse then stop there, as It was to tight before and would not go in to reverse.

just bolt it back up hold gear stick against it lightly stick should be aligned with 1st and second, if it isnt there are shims that can be fitted to space plunger out so it does

Trying to bolt it back up but as soon as it's tight can't get reverse. Only way it will go to reverse is if bolts are not fully tightened, but whole thing is slack then. Only got 2 spacers is there anything else I can use to space it further?

you can get more spacers to shim it out (or make some)

Been thinking about it and don't think Ive cleaned it right, I took it apart but only the ball and spring came out in pic, the plunger would not move but I didn't really want to force it in case I broke something which is what I usually do.
So cleaned and greased the ball and spring and put back together, so really the Plunger is still Seized in there. Its still all loosely bolted in so tomorrow I will do it again but this time try and free up the Plunger before putting it back together again.
If it needs more spacers I will try and make some out of something, not sure what though.

theres no point in fitting it if plunger isnt springy

When the 2 nuts are just finger tight it will move to the left but will Not go up in to the reverse position, 3 or 4 turns back on the nuts and it clicks in to reverse perfect, but the whole thing is loose.
Will I need a new one ?

you need to free the plunger off , fill it with plus gas or similar hit it a few times till it will pull out clean hole clean plunger refit
