Replacing rear shock absorbers

Hi all, I'm going o be changing the rear shock absorbers on my Defender 110 TD5.
So I have to lift the rear end, is it easy to get to the bolts that hold the shocks? Do the shocks come out easily? Should I have new nuts and bolts to change them? If so what is the bolt size?
 
The one thats a sod is usually the top mount.
Its quite often seized that bad thet it shears the mount.
Luckily the shock mounts bolt on, and are relativly cheap. the bottom mount, you can access with a cutter if needed.
if you have the time, clean the bolt up with a wire brush & spray with penetrating fluid twice a day for a week, that helps alot I find when it comes to old cruddy bolts, I even managed to remove my egr with no aggro with this method :)
 
dont really need to lift to change rears, just new nylock nuts for the top, taking the wheel off makes access easier, but you can squeeze round.
 
So I should just buy 2 M8 nyloc nuts and everything else should be fine....

just be carefull when undoing the top nuts, both of mine sheared off and i had to fit new mounts.give em a good soak of wd a couple of days before doing the shocks.
 
Some advice from a amateur who has done this job 3 times (including yesterday). If the shock mount looks bad then buy 2 new ones with nuts/washers before you even start. They aren't expensive. Also get an angle grinder with a good cutting disc and some good grips. Spending hours on your back cutting a shocker with a hack saw is not fun. I learnt the hard way first time I did this job. Also get a purpose made penetrating spray. Wd40 isn't.

Does anyone know the part number for the mounts for Defender TD5?
 
To loosen the top nuts use a good fitting ring spanner and hit it with a hammer! The impact should work better than pulling on a breaker bar with less risk of damage to the shock mounts
 
I will give it a try first. No logic giving £40 if I get them on the old mounts. Could buy something else for that money that I need for the landy....
 
Hi, is the top nut m12 x 1.75 like the front shocks? What about the bottom nut? Ive got the bushes to do this weekend so would like to get new nuts ready
 
old thread but i will add to it . When i replaced my mounts there was a lot of corrosion under one (your choice to look) , and i felt had of kept swinging on the mounting bolts i could of crushed the chassis in . my chassis feels solid , maybe im wrong and its rotten ? or you can crush the chassis even if its a new chassis ???? . i put spreader plates under the nuts . (big square washers) .
Doing it again i would of pushed the bolts out with a smaller bolt and left it in the hole , don't know if there is but i would guess there's tubes inside the chassis and perhaps they fell out of place and allowed the crush effect . THIS IS ALL GUESS WORK on my part , just my findings and best to ask first .
 
Crush tubes in chassis mate as per below. Doubt they’d fall out of place. Know corrosion spot and If you can’t wack it with a hammer without it deforming then it’s rotten. Also, you should have a crescent shape of angle in the corners to reinforce this location - can also be seen in pic
