My new wishbone for my 2004 TD4 has just arrived. I was having a look around yesterday before I fit it and noticed that the gap between the inside top edge of the tyre and the strut is about 3 or 4mm where as the gap on the right hand side of the car is double that.
Could that be due to the worn balljoint or should I be looking for another cause?

It could be the lower strut bolts are not fitted in the same position between sides. There's a degree of slack in there. If both side weren't set the same, this issue can occur.
There is also the possibility that one strut is bent, but it takes a large impact to do that.

If the strut is not bent, is it something I should be worried about?

There's a few things to check before taking corrective action. First make sure the wheels are the same part number and the tyres are the same make, style and size. If both of those match ok.
Then it's best to adjust the bottom bolts so the gap between the rim is the same both sides. The tracking will get knocked out, but that would need doing after the lower arms are changed anyway. You could get the camber angle set if you go to a suspension specialist for the tracking.
