Replacement ABS Accumulator

Hi Guys,

Just want to double check something as I am new to Range rover mechanics.

I recieved a new ABS accumulator from island 4x4 .

I believe that it should have been full of dot4 brake fluid , hence the reason for the screw on cap.

the one i have is completely dry .. no brake fluid contained whatsoever.

should i just fill it to the brim with dot 4 before screwing it into the abs pump assembly and not worry about it ? or is this not normal ?

Apologies if this is a numpty question , but i would rather be safe than sorry with nearly 3 tonnes of vehicle.

Is there a seal in there thats holding a reservior of brake fluid back then ? ... i thought the ABS pump pumped fluid and not air .

If i just bolt it back in ... will i not get air in the braking system ?
 
Presumably like other accumulators it has a charged bladder of gas inside it, once you screw it on, the pump pressurises fluid Which pushes against the bladder, this gives you a stored energy to assist with breaking
 
I just unbolted mine, and screwed the new one back in.

I understood that the accumulator comes full of nitrogen gas at high pressure kept in place by a diaphragm.

When you start the car, the pump pumps fluid in to the accumulator that compresses the gas thus storing "hydraulic energy" that is used up when the brake pedal is pressed. The pump then comes back on to keep the pressure up.

Therefore when new it's empty of fluid, but full of nitrogen gas at high pressure behind a diaphragm contained within.

If you're worried about air in the system then you could bleed the brakes. I don't think you'll need to though. The cap on a new accumulator is to keep dust out not fluid in.
