Hi, basically I've just bought an 03 Freelander. Whoever has had it before me has done some modifications, including removing the shaft that makes it 4wd. Do I still need to replace all tyres at the same time like I've been told to. Or can I replace as and when? thanks alot in advance.

Probably a good reason why the last owner remove the shaft. Do you have the history of the vehicle and why the modification. As for tyre conditions are all the same make or odd at rear.

It might possibly be because the VCU is shagged and they are trying to hide it.

Make sure you tell the insurance, that it's been modified. Some insurers refuse to insure a modified vehicle, others put the premium up. Don't be tempted to drive it without telling the insurance, as if you're unfortunate enough to be involved in something serious, your insurance will definitely try to get out of paying out.
I personally can't see the point in driving a 2WD Freelander, as it's heavy, shaped like a brick, and so uneconomical to run, and doesn't have the benefit of AWD when needed. It just seems silly to drag about an extra 300kg of weight unnecessarily.
It's not much bigger than a VW Golf, and a Golf diesel is way better on fuel.

I wouldn't swap my 2WD (for the last 8 years) Freelander for a Golf. I'm satisfied with near 40mpg and super reliability and cheap parts when needed - and enjoy the car still.
