ok just replaced my first wheel cylinder, tried trw it was duff out of the box and fluid went everywhere.

tried Lockheed Delphi and its on no fluid coming out of the wheel

Pedal is spongy but goes hard with a couple of pumps, am I right in thinking that the cylinder is fitted and the system is working mechanically and just needs a good bleed.

Are you sure that the shoes are adjusted up correctly ? Once they are set then try a gravity bleed. ie just open the bleed nipple and keep an eye on the fluid level for a bit then lock the nipple. Works for me.

k I shall try that.

i did get a vacuum gun to use for bleeding, tried that eezibleed thing - before i realised the seal on the new trw cylinder was non existent - but couldn't get a seal on the reservoir they don't do one for my reservoir and that universal cap is as much use as a kick in the slats :D.

bit the bullet and went for a naughty spin round the block, car stops with about 3 pumps of the pedal so i shall give it a bleed friday if the dot 4 fluid i ordered turns up.

there seems to be a distinct lack of motor factor shops these days and the local Halfords seems to be nothing more than a place for roof boxes and trinkets

Its still worth checking the shoe adjusters. If one shoe is backed off, then your first two pumps are going to be moving it towards the brake drum, and only the third one doing the actual braking.

Do make sure they're adjusted properly: Chock wheels, put in neutral, nip up the adjuster (a 1/2" nut on the backplate) until the wheel won't spin, then back off a couple of clicks until it turns free. Do that for all wheels before starting bleeding.

bugger :D

tried turning the adjuster bolt and it just went round and round, so took the drum back off and the bit that takes the top spring on the shoe nearest the drivers seat had snapped off.

so new shoes and springs on order

ok thx, fiddling with the master is probably further than I would want to go will need to build up some more confidence for that. One day I plan to swap to copper pipes but the current pipes are still ok so might tackle the master then unless something happens to it first.

car will stop with one push of pedal now I did the adjusters but pedal is very spongy, fluid arrived late yesterday so should be on for a bleed unless it starts pi$$ing down again
