Hi there,

Long story but I will try to keep it to a minimum.
Bought a 4.o HSE 2002 p38 at end of June with 70k. It had the 72k service 3 weeks ago, the following week my husband was driving when the car's temperature guage shot into the red, he noticed smoke from under the bonnet, the power steering went and the computer showed alternator fault.
The AA man towed him to the garage 2 weeks ago where, as he had stopped the car so quickly, there was no major engine damage. The car was now showing normal temp and it was obvious that the alternator belt was knackered.
My question is: is the alternator belt likely to have caused all the overheating, as the garage are saying they are going to fit a new one then check for overheating signs. They have also had the car for 10 days, saying that they cannot get the right pulley (?) - is this a difficult part to obtain for the p38 or are they mucking me about?
Any advice or suggestions gratefully received!
Thanks
Caroline

Hi first of all the alternater belt is a stock part and can be ordered over night and recieved the next day.( i think they about 20 quid, give or take).
The alternator is spun by the belt and this creates electricity which then charges the battery,
If the alternator pulley is seized then im sure you can get one delivered the next day, same as the belt.( perhaps they are looking for a second hand one ,and that is why they are taking forever).
I am not sure that a knackered belt or pulley would cause the overheating but it would create smoke due to the belt being pulled around over a seized pulley( friction).

Why dont you phone a few land rover garages up and see how long it would take them to get you one( when phoning ask reception to put you throu to there parts department).

good luck;)
